8 Sep 2009

Very Early Morning Snack

Cookies and milk

03:39 in the morning… Sunday morning. What were you doing at that time? You were probably sleeping soundly. And what I was on about? Well after watching a movie I prepared some warm vanilla flavoured milk and accompany it with my favourite chocolate cookies. That was really soothing.

The Newbie Night Creature

It was a month ago when I was intended to work during the night. Just the words of night shift give you shivers and you already think about the lack of sleep, daily life changes and how are you going to cope with it. You see all your little comfortable life and rituals being disturbed and you don’t like it. When you tell people you are going to work at night the first thing you hear is “Oh dear”, “How are you? Are you able to cope with it etc?” They asked that question so often that you were irritated with it. True, this is not a very easy one.

The first day was alright, everyone wants to go on break with you,. You went outside in the night and breathed the fresh air while the others are smoking. Once you were back home you’re craving for food. You made yourself a good breakfast with the family after a good shower and then you hopped in bed. Do you sleep immediately? No you have to spend some time online then you fell asleep.

You woke up only 5 hours later. You wanted to sleep more but you can’t because normally at those hours you’re working. You wandered around the house in pajamas, switched on the TV to watch some cartoons with a cup of tea and you started liking the chilling and spent some time online with your friend whom you can’t talk during the day (remember because you usually worked at those hours).

Day and Night

Then you told yourself it would be good to have another sleep before going back to work in the afternoon. You went to bed and tried to sleep. You still can’t. You’re annoyed and you chose to sleep on the couch instead with the TV on and it’s cool you slept… for less than 2 hours. You’re re-chilling again and finally time to get ready for work.

The second and the third day were undeniably the most difficult ones because there was an accumulation of lack of sleep and exhaustion. At the office the environment is quite alright and friendly. Anyway being cool, relaxed and in happy moods and performing great at the same time is the strength of our team, without being presumptuous. When there was less work, I liked bullying the others (in a friendly way) to avoid being immersed in boredom. That was how it kept you awake else ‘you gave up the ghost’.

As the days went by you start getting used to the odd hours and you start (have to) taking things positively because you are making yourself new buddies at work, you can do your things in the morning and do not have to wait for the week-end to do it especially administrative matter. During the week-ends when you want to have a nice sleep like everyone you find yourself up in the middle of the night, fully alert in a silent house. If you don’t go out then you are at home reading or watching TV or on MSN or Facebooking or watching a movie and at some point you go to make yourself a snack because you’re certainly hungry (especially at dinner time at office during the week) or all at the same time! You go to sleep much later… or rather very early in the morning.

This is a life of a newbie night creature.
